Today we will be unraveling some interesting and surprising facts about MARVEL, a company that initially started as a comic book publisher to become one of the most successful entertainment empires in the world. Marvel Comics was found by magazine publisher Martin Goodman in 1939 under the name Timely Comics. The company published its first comic in October 1939. Stanley Lieber who wrote under the name Stan Lee was hired and later became the editor of the comics line, creating a number of popular characters including Spiderman, The Hulk, Thor, Black Panther, the X-Men, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. By the 1950’s Timely was commonly referred to as Atlas Comics. In 1961 the first Marvel branded comics were published. By 1965 the company was selling more than 50 million comic books per year. Marvel went through a couple of different owners before it was purchased by McAndrews & Forbes which was owned by Revlon executive Ronald Perelman in 1989 and he took the company public. Over the year Marvel has dealt with the threat of bankruptcy couple different times. But now under the direction of Disney which has owned Marvel Entertainment since 2009, Marvel is experiencing unparalleled success with a number of billion-dollar film franchises including The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. #10 The founder of Marvel was almost in the Hindenburg disaster. Martin Goodman the founder of Marvel was supposed to be a passenger on the Hindenburg. But if he had made the flight on the German passenger airship, the Marvel Universe would never have been created. The accident killed 35 of the 97 people on board. Goodman and his wife who were returning from their honeymoon trip couldn’t get seats together, so they took a plane – otherwise, they would have died in a fiery crash worthy of a Marvel splash page.

#09 Spiderman has appeared in the most solo Marvel comic books. Spiderman is the most prolific superhero in the history of Marvel, appearing in more comic books than any other Marvel character. Spiderman was created by Stan Lee and debuted in March 1963 with the first issue of “The Amazing Spiderman”. Since then Spiderman has appeared in more than 2575 comic books.

#08 Marvel has had 8 different headquarters in New York City. The current headquarters is located at Fifth Avenue and it not only serves as a headquarter of the company but also a museum of sorts where a number of iconic Marvel items are displayed including Thor’s Hammer, Captain America’s Shield and some of Doctor Strange’s relics and 3 of Iron Man’s suits.

#07 Marvel used to own rights to the word “Zombie”. Marvel trademarked the word Zombie in 1975 and they held publishing rights to the world 1996.

#06 Eminem was made into a Marvel character. A Marvel character created with the name and likeness of Eminem was introduced into the Marvel Universe in Eminem The Punisher Vol. 1 in 2009. The character’s name is Marshall Mathers III and goes by the alias Eminem. He’s known for his above average Human Intelligence and exceptional shooting skills.

#05 Disney bought Marvel for a staggering amount of $4,200,000,000. In 2009 Disney made an investment in the company by buying it for 4.2 billion dollars. Since then Marvel films have grossed an astonishing amount of 13 billion dollars globally at the box office.

#04 Stan Lee has appeared in every Marvel movie till date. Lee said his favorite cameo in the 2008 movie Iron Man when Tony Stark mistakes him for Hugh Hefner. After realizing his mistake he apologizes and Lee responds that’s ok, I get it all the time.

#03 Star Wars #1 is the best selling comic in the 21st century. Star Wars saved Marvel from bankruptcy in the 70s thanks to incredibly profitable licensing deals and in 2015 Star Wars brought more success to Marvel with the release of Star Wars #1 comic book. Star Wars #1 sold a humongous amount of 1 million 73,000 copies becoming the only comic book to sell more than a million copies in the 21st century.

#02 The Avengers is the highest grossing Marvel film as of 2017. The Avengers was just the sixth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it was released in 2012 after being created with a budget of 220 million dollars. The movie went on to become the highest grossing Marvel movie of all time with a worldwide box office gross of over 1.5 billion dollars and it still holds the record for Marvel. The film was the first Marvel production to gain more than 1 billion dollars in ticket sales and it is the highest grossing film of 2012. Marvel is also the highest grossing film franchise of all time.

#01 The most valuable Marvel comic is the Marvel Comics #1. Marvel Comics #1 was published in 1939 by Timely Comics which would later be renamed as Marvel. It was Timely’s first publication featuring the very first appearances of the Human Torch, the Android Superhero, the Submariner of Atlantis and Kazar the Great. The first print of 80,000 copies sold out quickly and the second printing of 800,000 copies also sold out soon enough. In 1939 the comic book sold for 10 cents. But today it is considered the most valuable Marvel comic book with a value of $859,000 for a mint edition copy.
